    Throughout the past year, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications has been celebrating its 30th anniversary.     The CloudLightning Project in Europe has published preliminary results from a survey on Barriers to Using HPC in the Cloud. According to the report: “ . . . trust in cloud computing would appear to be a significant barrier to adopting cloud computing for HPC workloads. Data management concerns dominate the responses.”

    The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced two major awards to establish Scientific Software Innovation Institutes (S2I2). The awards, totaling $35 million over five years, will support the Molecular Sciences Software Institute and the Science Gateways Community Institute, both of which will serve as long-term hubs for scientific software development, maintenance and education.
