    UAS technology has the potential to bring saving and efficiency and most important 3D real world data to Geoscientists, from aerial imaging for inspections and photogrammetry and LiDAR for mapping. The UAS provides a platform for the collection of spatial data with unprecedented accuracy and precision. Facilities, as well as land and its subsurface can be digitally modeled and studies via VR interface, in order to provide the perspective required by the energy industry. 

    Environmental and economic challenges created by the exploitation of natural resources now require a quantified approach to risk mitigation in often complex areas of high consequence. In this presentation I will discuss some of the hardware and software infrastructure available and deployed by our company such as the surveying drones and complementary tools and processing of the captured data for analysis, prediction and visualization. Allowing for remote viewing through internet portals the end users. I will also present examples of how these components are combined and used by groups in the field and the board room to enhance and streamline their efforts in modeling their real world assets for near real time situational awareness.

    HPC Systems - Not a good fit for most IT departments?

    Abstract: Everyone one can agree, there are major differences between running a 5,000-head cattle ranch with only 2 customers versus tending a herd of 500 Alpaca sheep whose wool is destined for thousands of boutique customers. Each business has its own sets of challenges to be addressed. IT staffs deal with thousands of users typically, and only need to deploy a few dozen servers to manage them. HPC staffs typically deal with thousands of servers and usually only a dozen to hundreds of users having high-end workstations with specialty or home-grown software. The jobs for these two staffs are vastly different. Might it take a different organization with different skills to manage these very different scenarios? In this presentation, we will discuss the similarities and differences between the needs presented to HPC departments vs those presented to IT departments. Our goal is for you to leave with at least one challenge for your IT or HPC computing departments to consider that will make your company stronger, more agile, better prepared for disaster, or better at meeting the needs of its user base. 

    Presenter’s Bio: Bill Menger - President, Houston HPC Services, Inc. Deepak Khosla – Founder CEO, eXcellence in IS Solutions | X-ISS 

    Bill holds BS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Geophysics from Texas A&M University (1977). Bill’s engineering career included stops with the US Navy, Conoco, ION Global Geophysical, and currently Houston HPC Services. His experience spans HPC Software development to supervising a team of HPC admins and software developers. At ION Bill managed a team of thirteen and a budget of $20MM. Bill is co-founder, former board member, and past President of the Society of HPC Professionals. Bill and his wife Patty are A2 square dancers, parents of three boys, and have six grandchildren. Deepak Khosla is the Founder and CEO of X-ISS and has over 25 years of managerial and development experience in technology and software industries. Prior to X-ISS, Deepak served as the President and Co-Founder of NetPartners. Previously, Deepak held a management position at ParaNet. Deepak began his career with Landmark Graphics leaving the company as a product manager. Deepak received a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston.

    Deep Learning Platform for Seismic Data Analytics

    Abstract: The Cloud Computing Research Lab at Prairie View A&M University has been working on developing a scalable cloud platform for seismic data analytics to facilitate a variety of interpretation scenarios. The recognition of 3D complex geological features in noisy seismic datasets is a daunting challenge in pattern recognition. Early experience shows that traditional machine learning techniques such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Logistic Regression may be insufficient for this task. We will present our experience of building a deep learning based seismic data analytics platform on top of Apache Spark and Google TensorFlow, and demonstrate the early results of applying Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) on a geological fault detection case study. Moreover, we will also present the collaborative work with FEI on applying remote visualization technology to large seismic datasets that are distributed in the Spark environment. The work is sponsored by National Science Foundation. 

    Presenter’s Bio: Dr. Lei Huang is an Assistant Professor at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), where he is leading research at the Cloud Computing Research Lab. He also serves as Associate Director of Research in the Center of Excellence in Research and Education for Big Military Data Intelligence at PVAMU. He currently has several active research projects sponsored by NSF and DOD in Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing and High Performance Computing areas. He joined the university in 2011 having previous experience in HPC research at the University of Houston. Huang has a Ph.D. from the Computer Science department at University of Houston in 2006.

    Visualization Infrastructure at the Campus Scale

    : Visualization technology at Rice University shows up everywhere, from undergraduate education to advanced research and international collaboration. The University provides a varied collection of tools and facilities, as well as training, in order to provide the flexibility required by researchers and educators and their, often quite complex, workflows. In this presentation I will discuss some of the hardware and software infrastructure available on campus such as the DAVinCI visualization wall and remote visualization portal. I will also present examples of how these components are combined and used by groups on campus to streamline their efforts in teaching, research, and outreach. 

    Presenter’s Bio:
    Erik Engquist is the Visualization Manager at Rice University. In this role he provides training and support for visualization activities and infrastructure across campus. He joined the university in 2011 having previously supported visualization research at the University of Houston and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Erik has a M.Sc. from the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

    2017 marks the 10th anniversary for the Oil and Gas High Performance Computing (HPC) Conference, hosted annually at Rice University. The conference is the premier meeting place for the industry to engage in conversations about challenges and opportunities in high performance computing, information technology, computational science and engineering, and data science. Attended by 500+ leaders from the oil and gas industry, academia, national labs, and IT industry, this is a unique opportunity to engage key stakeholders.

    The Program Committee is pleased to invite you to submit a technical abstract(s) to be considered for the conference program. The conference is structured with keynote and plenary presentations and thematically organized parallel sessions. The 2016 themes were:Algorithms & Accelerators I; Algorithms & Accelerators II; Facilities, Infrastructure & Visualization; Data Analytics Approaches and Tools; a Disruptive Technology track featuring lightning tech-talks on emerging technologies; and a student poster session.

    Technical themes for the 2017 conference sessions will be determined based on the diversity and strengths of the abstracts accepted. In addition to regular conference abstracts we also encourage students to submit poster abstracts on their HPC graduate research.

    High-performance computing, computational science and engineering, data science, and information technology continue to stand out across the oil and gas industry as critical business enablers. With Moore’s law as we know it coming to an end, challenges are mounting around a rapidly changing technology landscape. Challenges also represent opportunities and the need for investments in people (workforce), algorithms, software innovations, and hardware platforms to support system scalability and demands for increasing digitization in a tough oil & gas market. In light of these challenges and opportunities we invite abstracts in the following areas:

    • Big data and machine learning in oil & gas
    • Making exascale a reality in oil & gas
    • Distributed data management
    • Data visualization (local, distributed & remote)
    • High performance i/o and file systems
    • Programming models and examples for heterogeneous/hybrid system architectures
    • Parallel software development and tools
    • Algorithms and scalability
    • HPC facilities and infrastructure scaling
    • Clouds for scale-up and scale-out technical computing
    • Curriculum, education and training – what skill set does the industry need moving forward?
    • Open Source – can industry better leverage open source and DevOps?

    The Program Committee is looking for abstracts that are directly relevant to needs of the oil and gas industry. We hope to attract a broad set of abstracts, and are open to submissions beyond the topics listed. Abstracts that come across as marketing will be rejected without further review. In cases where you think a marketing message may be a concern, we strongly encourage you to partner with a customer and highlight users and relevant use-cases.

    Abstract: Those of us inside the industry understand that high performance and supercomputing (HPC) technology is causing a paradigm shift across the entire computing community. Today, HPC technology is enhancing productivity and efficiency in businesses as diverse as Oil&Gas exploration, manufacturing, precision agriculture, and retail sales. Unfortunately, few people, stop to consider – or quantify – the macroeconomic payoff that can occur with the help of high performance computers and vast amounts of data.

    Earl J. Dodd (♂) as a Supercomputing Strategist, leverages the high performance computing (HPC) landscape and applies his specialized genius to find and fulfill the Client’s unexpected needs to create a safer, cleaner world. 

    With over 32 years of experience in Supercomputing, HPC, and Big Data, and a strong ability to problem solve and formulate strategy, Mr. Dodd helps companies and governments achieve their desired ROI by leveraging evolving computing technologies (e.g., the Internet of Things) and business models (e.g., Cloud Computing). Mr. Dodd's technical focus is on strategy formulation for secure ultra-scale architectures and 3D visual collaboration environments leveraging the cloud computing business model. These strategies help drive the next generation of computationally-steered workflows, applications and decision support environments for true situational awareness and learning environments. 

    Mr. Dodd holds degrees in Mining Engineering and an MBA. He is actively engaged with the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, White House Office of Science & Technology Policy, president of the Society of HPC Professionals, Compute Canada, Ontario Ministry of Research & Innovation (MRI) and other professional organizations and governments.
